How do you discover something significant to science?*

Who is the next Einstein, Newton etc and what will they discover?

Answers:

1) If have to be in the same league as Einstein and Newton. I think either found a breakthrough about laws of conservations.. but maybe biological come to think of it. Like completely change the species with a change of a few genes?

2) You need a combination of brainpower with good luck. There are all kinds of fascinating unsolved problems and/or frontiers in physics. You need the brainpower to solve them, and you need the luck that for some reason, your solution turned out to be very usefull. When Einstein formulated special relativity, he used his brainpower to fill a gap in electromagnetic theory, which was great, but luckily it turned out to change physics forever.

3) Since you mention Einstein and Newton, then I assume you are asking about discovery in physics. Right now, physicists are working on a single theory that can explain ALL physical phenonmenon, including the origin, the nature, and the fate of the Universe. This is the most significant work going on today, and the one person who has made the most contribution is Edward Witten. Many have said that he is our next Einstein. So how does Edward Witten discover something significant to physics? It turns out that he is also by far one of the most brilliant mathematician alive today. It is through his breakthroughs in solving extremely complicated mathematical problems that he is able to discover something new and gain insight to this new theory (Superstring Theory).
