What Does a Credit Repair Scam Smell Like?

A credit repair scam smells like that too good to be true promise your Mom warned you about. A credit repair scam is bound to be littered with guarantees, free incentives and most of all no credible support staff or an easy way to contact them.

A credit repair scam may not have a particular odor, but there are certain indications that you may be speaking to a credit repair company that is less than legitimate. Here are some indications that the credit repair company may stink:

Advance fees - Be cautious if a credit repair company requests that you pay them in advance for their services, they should only charge you after the agreed upon work has been performed.

Companies that don't inform you of your rights - You do not have to hire a credit repair company, you do have the right to do credit repair on your own.

Companies that suggest you get a new identity - Getting a new identity or participating in file segregation is a serious crime. You should only work with legitimate companies that work with you on repairing your personal credit report.

They guarantee fast results - You should be wary of guarantees and fast fixes. Legitimate credit repair does not happen overnight.

Do your research and know your options. There are a lot of good credit repair companies out there that help fix credit, but don’t be fooled by a credit repair scam.
