Question:
Will my credit record be affected by this? HELP!!!?
Ok, so someone I know bought me one month of internet service just to try it out. It is under his credit card, but for some reason, it's my billing and name that's on record. It's still his credit card though. He did not pay for the services (yea I know that's bad of him) and there are letters that are being sent to me from third party collection agencies called the arch group inc. to collect payment. Anyways, whose credit will it affect? Will it affect my credit history or his credit history? It has my name and billing address and tha'ts it but it's HIS credit card. My SSN is not associated with the account or anything since I don't even have my own credit card on file with them. It's just that it's my name and billing. Will it affect my credit history or can it affect me in any way?
Answers:
1) dont understand, surely if he's paid for a service by credit card, the service is now paid and its his credit card company chasing a payment.... from him?
2) If you did not order the service or authorize the person to order the service on your behalf you probably have no culpability. If you have contacted the ISP and they will not stop the billing contact the consumer affairs office of your state Attorney General for assistance. Document all contact with the ISP. A letter from the AG works wonders.
3) Looks like your plot has thickened. If this friend gave the ISP his credit card, they would be automatically charging that credit card and you would not be receiving any bills. If the ISP and now a collection agency have been sending bills in your name to your address for service you used, then, yes, it is your credit on the line. They don't need your SS#. They have your name and address which is enough to put it on your credit report. It sounds like either your friend didn't set up payment on that credit card or maybe the real owner of the credit card disputed the charges. In either case, YOU used the service, YOU owe the money. You might want to settle this up before someone comes after you for fraudulent credit card usage.
4) i think you are on the line. because you're receiving the bills all the time. the collection agency has your name and address on file which are enough to report to credit bureaus. be careful
5) Cancel the internet service. Looks like you are the thief. Juno and Netzero sometimes have free internet service, 10 hours for a month. No checking account or cc required to sign up.
6) Obviously, neither of you remembered to cancel the service at the end of the month. It also appears that only the first month was on his credit card and that the collection calls relate to the subsequent months. Did you sign anything or agree to anything, online, by phone, or otherwise? I had a big fight with DirecTV where a corrupt satellite dish company (Consolidated Smart Systems) used their credit card and my name and address to open an account fraudulently and they paid the first six months, but then DirecTV demanded that I pay the remaining months.
