Why do we have to apply for a SSN for our babies when there is so much identity theft going on?

I had to apply for SSN's for my babies before we even left the hospital with them. Now with this new crisis of identity theft I have to guard those numbers for the next 18 years. Doesn't this seem insane that we have to do this? I have their SS cards which they obviously can't sign yet & I have to keep them guarded until they are old enough to use them. Why can't they just apply for the SSN themselves when they get of age to work & actually NEED it? That's what I did. My babies don't file an income tax return. I do. Does an official birth certificate not count anymore?

1) If you file an income tax return you must have a ss number.

2) Because it is the unofficial "identity" card for Americans nowdays. It gives you a way to claim them as dependents and apply for aide if you need it. It is a way to legally document their existance here.

3) They keep track of our citizens using those cards, they are not only for working, but are proof of our acceptation of the system... Dont ask about what is the system...

4) Good Question. On April 15, of the first year that children were required to have SS Cards, over 7 Million babies disappeared from the face of the earth. There were over 7 million fictitious children, that didn't even exist, being claimed as dependents. That's right here in the US. (And yet, Democrats always say that the people Want to pay More Taxes.)

7) Nope in order to get the earned income tax you must have a SS#. Also to get any assistance from the state you must have it. For your child to go to school you must have it. Things have changed since you were a child.
