Identity theft?*

My ex left the country 2 weeks ago and all he did was to call me and tell that he has left my personal stuff[by that I mean papers with my personal information] lying all over the place.I did't know he still had anymore of my personal stuff cos I thought I had collected everything.I am so afraid of identity theft.I am thinking of taking identity theft insurance but Iam so confused.Pls help

Answers:

1) I personally think that Identity theft insurance is a scam, or at least not worth what you pay for it. If my identity was stolen I would do a bunch of research and write a bunch of letters to solve the problem. I think I'd be doing that whether I had the insurance or not. When you say he left your personal stuff lying all over the place, are you talking about in an apartment or on the ground near the mall or what?

2) There isn't a question here. Identity theft insurance only pays to help you replace documents. It's not going to PREVENT a theft.

3) If you have a valid reason to think someone can target you for identity theft, then place waivers onto your credit report for each of the major credit reporting agencies.

4) Insurance = Scam. Monitoring = Scam. Fraud Alert=Useless. Petitioning for help from Credit Reporting Companies = fruitless. If you want to protect your identity, check to see if your state has a Credit Freeze law. It's easy and cheap (one-time fee of $5 to $10 usually, not a subscription). A credit freeze blocks the credit reporting company from releasing your credit report without your express permission, PER INSTANCE. That means that unless you say "Yes, Best Buy in Houston Texas can access my account one time", there's no gettin' it. I've pointed you to an artcile I wrote about this since it ticks me off that ID theft can be prevented so easily, but there's so little press about it.
