1) I've never done it....but I know a lot about the issue: In general, you need to be drastically behind in payments before you can attempt to get a settlement. Card carriers aren't going to give settlements to people who are current on their payments. Often, credit card companies will settle debts in lieu of loosing everything in a bankruptcy filing. If you are drastically behind, you might be able to settle in the 50% range. Your creditors are not obligated to accept settlements from you or any firm you hire...they might respond by suing you. In trying to get a settlement, always get the terms of the settlement FIRST in writing prior to paying. Never accept verbal promises from creditors/debt collectors about settlements....they'll just deny that any settlement was ever made once they get your money.
