Prepaid credit cards?*
My son is going to Europe next year, so he will need money for shopping, food, emergencies .etc. but I do not want him carrying around bundles of cash, particularly because he is under 18. I was wondering if anybody knew of any prepaid credit cards (that you spend as much as you put on) that can be used overseas by a under 18 year old?
Answers:
1) I am not sure about the credit cards but if you go with a big name--like the visa dot one--he should be able to use it. Have you thought about travelers checks when I went to Europe (almost 9 years ago) I used those and had no problems.
2) There is no age limit for prepaid credit cards, since there is no reliability issue,it is already paid.
3) Visa Debit. Works like a Visa card, but it kinda like a saving account. You can only spend the money on the account, so you cant get into debt. But your son can use it anywhere Visa is accepted. Ask your bank if they do a Visa Debit cards. In Australia and the UK anyone over 16 can have a visa debit card, and if you then hook up internet banking you can transfer funds into it. PS. Maybe give him a small credit card with $500 on it, and tell him if he spends it then he has to pay you back.
4) He could get a visa debit or debit mastercard, which works like a credit card but uses your own money. Or Travelex, is probably the safest way but there are some fee's involved. http://www.cashpassport.com.au/
5) All of the answers or suggestions are good for people trying to help you out.Another easy way is walk in your local banking ctr and open savings A/C under his name and ask them to offer him a credit card of the exact amount you will deposit in the account and that will be his limit e.g $1000.00 I hope this helps.
6) Debit cards should help you...Visa Debit for example...
7) anyone with the visa logo on it and american express has one
8) Here in Australia there was BOPO which is a Visa debit card, but they have just closed because the terminal people have gone bust. At my local post office on the gift rack there is an ANZ pre-paid Visa card that you can purchase and top up.
9) Visa is bigger in Europe than Mastercerd although both are widely accepted. Get a Debit Visa card!! Can be use anywhere Visa is accepted inc online...handy for booking tours etc cheap and if you have the account detaila you can always top it up..sorry what else are parents for?!? Not that I'm telling you to do this but...if you both have online access (via the same PIN) then he wont go stupid with the money and you can drip feed him. Hope that helps...
