Is it safe to give away the first 6 digits of my VISA card?*

I was contacting VISA via email regarding a problem I'm having and they're asking for the first 6 digits of my credit card.

Answers:

1) If you're sure it's Visa, then it should be safe, but I wouldn't be comfortable giving out the details to a company that holds it, if anything, I'd limit them to your address, name, and date of birth, if they still question your identity after this, ask to speak to a supervisor, also, read up on any relevant sections of the 1984/1998DPA.

2) I would call them, don't send it over email.

3) Yes...as long as it's just the first six digits.

4) they know it anyway cuz they gave you the card. but other than them give the digits to NOBODY

5) I've never heard of anyone asking for the first six digits for verification. Normally it's the last four digits. If whoever is contacting you has the last four and you give them the first six, then they have your complete number. Like others have mentioned, I'd use the phone.

6) Well no one can do anything without the remaining digits anyway...so they are just as concerned that you are indeed the card holder as you are concerned that they really are Visa.
