What Credit/Debit Cards are accepted World-Wide?*
Answers:
1) Visa
2) Visa and MasterCard
3) None. There are many places where no credit cards are accepted, including most parts of Antarctica, for obvious reasons. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are all accepted in most places where U.S. citizens commonly travel.
4) Any Visa credit card/debit card or prepaid card must be accepted by mandate by any merchant or ATM displaying the Visa logo. To not do so is a breach of Visa regulations. There are some exceptions such as the Visa Electron mark. Electron cards are only mandated to be accepted by merchants/ATMs displaying the Visa Electron logo. I think the same is true of Mastercard and American Express. In pratice though, merchants and acquirers are often far too relaxed on this and technical issues (such as not updating BIN tables) along with poor staff training can cause problems.
